The wall is the structural support system for the staircase the backdrop to the reception as well as a display system for Yamini’s flowing, colourful products.
We began Yamini store, Bangalore with an existing house, whose footprint we retained, but fundamentally re-built to house the showroom as well as office of Yamini stores. Using the existing column locations, we started off by identifying a central space. We located the structural and geographical centre of the space here, by locating a 40 foot high exposed concrete wall as the focal point around which shop and offices revolve. This wall is the structural support system for the staircase the back drop to the reception as well as a display system for Yamini’ s flowing, colourful products.
Natural light and inside-outside connection
We also attempted to use the advantage of open spaces around the bungalow for natural light, and maintain a strong inside-outside connection with each space in the store. This is done with large pivoted doors and glass openings to an outside that has been kept purposefully grey- an extension of the grey – white floor and texture of the inside space. This subdued use of colour, and crisp lines devoid of unnecessary detail was meant to enhance the liveliness of the product.
Using the craft
However in keeping with Yamini’ s product-line - home furnishings that encourage natural weaves, cottage industry and craft, the materials used in the interior design of the showroom have been natural products, saw-cut unfinished wood, finished with earthy textures, kerosene cut unpolished granite but set in a very contemporary space complimented by the crafty but sleek curved steel roof.
