The main head office of the Bombay Municipal Corporation is seated in this 1860’s building by RL Stevens. For the first time in its history, the BMC requested a public expression of interest in the renovation, re-organisation and conservation of their Head office, along with the newer annexe building next to it. Our firm was awarded the project for the renovation of the grade I’ Heritage building along with conservation architect ANL Associates. Besides the re-organisation of the functions and needs for a fast-growing corporation our challenge has been to integrate the technologies of efficient air-conditioning, lighting and computer networks into this 150-year-old structure, while retaining & repairing its wooden ceilings, Minton tile floors and its neo-gothic arches and stained glass windows.
We have attempted to integrate a 21st century efficiency into a 19th century aesthetic as boldly and lightly as possible.
