Embracing principles of modularity, and operational efficiency, the design endeavours to foster a conducive environment for collegiate life, while developing a prototype for the facility.

As a part of the SR University architecture, we designed a hostel facility catering to 4300 male students, encompassing an expansive built-up area of approximately 9 lakh sq.ft. on a 7.6-acre land parcel. Embracing principles of modularity, and operational efficiency, the design endeavours to foster a conducive environment for collegiate life, while developing a prototype for the facility.

Each block is meticulously crafted to house triple-sharing accommodations, with optimal bay sizes and private balconies that overlook panoramic views of dynamic courtyards, thereby promoting a robust sense of communal engagement.  The utilization of a G+5 structural configuration optimizes spatial efficiency, with ground-level accommodations too, strategically incorporated. Furthermore, the placement of common toilet blocks at the termini of all doubly loaded corridors designed with abundant natural illumination and step-outs, facilitating an atmosphere for “locker room interactions.” Similarly the pantry is in a semi-open space at every level to garner different type of communal environment.

Interactive student interface

At the crux of the hostel architecture design lies a pursuit of light and ventilation. Every room’s balcony, integrated to serve as an interactive and thermally insulating interface. These balconies are also conceived as soft thresholds between the privacy of the rooms to the public courtyards encouraging outdoor activities and social interactions. Doubly loaded corridors are strategically interspersed with break out spaces such as reading rooms, outdoor gym, deep verandahs to unwind and nurture bonds. The corridors are conceived to allow wind flows from east to west, punctuated by a central five-story atrium and terraces, which serve as sanctuaries for repose and rejuvenation.

Atrium as a fulcrum for vertical social integration

These are profusions of daylight and airiness, with the atrium serving as the fulcrum for vertical social integration. Its interesting play of light & shadow, in the challenging climate of Warangal facilitate peer engagement across multiple levels. Staircase area opens & swells for gatherings. The staircase staggers vertically again to foster communion between levels is more. Embracing the idea of a  low-rise, high-density built form, the design seeks to establish an immersive student experience, engaged in sports and outdoor activities.  Shaded courtyards with play courts created by interlocking many blocks, encapsulates the idea of availing density as means to create bonds & friendships.

The vibrant palette of blue and magenta emphasizes building skins and brightens courtyards, while active and passive landscaping are catalysts for both engagement and solitude.Overall, the design prioritizes functionality, sustainability, and fostering a vibrant, inclusive student community.
